The Murkey Depths of Online Xenophobia

There’s a fantastic Twitter feed aimed at journalists and bloggers which sends you periodic reminders to avoid reading comments.

And this is the advice I probably should have heeded today after my piece entitled “Theresa May’s Immigration Policy is Ruining People’s Health” was published on HuffPost.

The UKIP/BNP supporters appeared to be out in full-force this morning and afternoon and my post was bombarded with hundreds of comments, the majority of them from an anti-immigration standpoint.

Many of them could be dismissed simply as the product of misinformation, of which this government has waged a huge PR campaign surrounding immigration. Not everyone, after all, is interested in the minutiae of immigration policy.
